Self-hosted IT & equipment asset tracking, without the enterprise CMDB baggage

Every Asset. Logged, Tracked, Accounted For.

AssetLogit is the asset tracker built for the IT manager who's currently doing this in a spreadsheet. Real Active Directory and Entra ID sign-in, barcode scanning from a phone camera, a disposal record that doesn't go silent the day a laptop leaves the building, and a full audit trail with automatic email alerts — installed on your own server, not ours.

Free forever up to 10 assets. Self-hosted — your data never leaves your server.

Sound familiar? "Who has asset X." "When does its warranty expire." "What did we ever do with that old laptop." Worse: that inventory usually lives in one spreadsheet, on one laptop, with no backup and no audit trail. If that laptop dies — or a row just quietly disappears — there's no record. And when an auditor asks how you know who did what, and how you know that asset didn't just vanish off a spreadsheet with no trail, "I'm pretty sure Dave has it" isn't an answer. That's exactly what AssetLogit replaces.

Built for how IT actually works, not how a CMDB salesperson imagines it

Six things AssetLogit does that most tools in this price range either charge extra for, or don't do at all.

Plugs into the AD or Entra ID you already run

No new silo of usernames and passwords to manage. AssetLogit signs users in against your existing Active Directory or Microsoft Entra ID, auto-syncs domains and groups, and pulls real last-logon and group membership data straight off the device record. Standard on every tier, never a paid add-on.

Scan it with the phone already in your pocket

Point any phone or tablet browser camera at a barcode or QR code and the asset tag or serial fills itself in — for a brand-new asset, or to instantly pull up one already on the system. Scan the sticker on a laptop in the field and its full record, owner, and history is on screen in seconds, no typing a tag ID by hand. No scanner gun to buy, no separate app to install, no dead battery in a drawer. Built for intake, audits, and the annual "where did all this stuff go" walk-through.

A disposal record, not just a deletion

Most tools go quiet the moment an asset leaves the building. AssetLogit tracks disposal type, buyer, sale price, book value at disposal, and the e-waste or recycling company that took it — so when the auditor or the insurer asks what happened to that laptop, you have an answer instead of a shrug.

One system, every company you run

Look after a group of related companies or multiple sites? You don't need five logins and five spreadsheets. AssetLogit scopes users and categories per company inside one install, so one IT manager sees everything without any company's data bleeding into another's.

Runs on a $6 server, updates in one click

Host it on your own small VPS for a fraction of enterprise CMDB pricing — your asset data never leaves your infrastructure, because it never touches ours. Automated daily backups run without you thinking about it, and updates apply from the browser with one click, snapshot and rollback included if anything looks wrong.

Every change emailed to you, the moment it happens

A real audit log — every add, edit, delete, reassignment, and status change writes to system_audit_log and fires an automatic email. You don't find out something changed by accident weeks later; the system tells you the moment it happens, and keeps the record to prove it. Warranties get the same treatment: automatic alerts at 90 days and again at 60 days before support runs out, not after.

How it actually works, day to day

No lengthy implementation project. No sales engineer. This is the whole workflow.

  1. 01

Sign in with the AD or Entra ID account you already have

Point AssetLogit at your domain, sync your groups, and your team is in. No separate account creation, no forgotten "asset tool" password sitting in a password manager. Not on AD or Entra ID yet? Plain email/password accounts work too — you can turn on directory sign-in later.

  2. 02

Scan it in with your phone

New laptop, new monitor, new phone — open the browser, point the camera at the barcode, and the tag ID and serial land in the record. Add owner, location, warranty date, and you're done.

  3. 03

Answer "who has this" in one scan or search — with proof

Already-tagged asset in front of you? Scan its barcode instead of typing anything and its record opens straight away. Or type a name, a tag ID, or a serial number. Either way you get the current owner, full assignment history straight from the audit log, warranty status, and every note attached to it — not a guess based on the last time someone remembered to update a spreadsheet.

  4. 04

Retire it properly when it's done

Run it through the disposal workflow: disposal type, buyer, sale price, book value, and the recycler or e-waste company that took it off your hands. The record stays, even after the asset doesn't.

One license. Your own server. No per-seat games.

AssetLogit is self-hosted only — we don't run your data on our servers, so there's nothing to migrate away from later. Buy a flat annual license sized to your asset count, install it on infrastructure you already control, and every tier gets the full product.

No feature gating, ever. Unlimited users, AD/Entra ID sign-in, phone-camera scanning, the full disposal workflow, and the complete audit log with email alerts ship standard on every single tier — including Free. The only thing that changes as you move up is how many assets and sites you're licensed for.

Security that would survive an audit, not just a sales call

Nothing below is aspirational — it's what's actually in the code, standard on every tier.

Two-factor authentication, built in

Email-based 2FA on every login, with single-use codes that expire in 10 minutes. You can force it for specific IP ranges (say, anyone connecting off-site) while trusting your office network, or the other way around — your call, configured per environment, not an all-or-nothing switch.

Automatic lockout against brute-force

Repeated failed logins from an IP trigger an automatic, timed lockout — and the system specifically watches for "username spraying" (many different usernames failing from the same address), not just repeated attempts on one account. Passwords themselves are never stored in plain text: each one is salted and hashed with PBKDF2.

Permissions down to the category and action

Not just "admin" or "everyone." Give a user view-only access to one asset category and full edit rights on another, control who can retire or delete an asset separately from who can just reassign one, and scope it all per company for multi-entity setups. Every permission change writes to the audit log too.

HTTPS and hardened headers, out of the box

A free HTTPS certificate is one click away in Settings (Let's Encrypt under the hood), and once it's on, the app automatically sends HSTS along with the security headers it sends regardless — CSP, X-Frame-Options, and nosniff — so browsers enforce the hardening for you. The installer also locks the firewall down to just SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS.

Not just an IT tool — every department gets the access it actually needs

Real per-category, per-action permissions mean IT, HR, and Facilities don't all share one all-or-nothing login.

Available today

IT — full lifecycle control

Add, edit, reassign, and retire any asset, and see the complete audit trail. The role this whole product is built around.

Available today

Finance — disposal, once it's actually retired

A separate "can dispose" permission lets Finance handle the disposal step on its own, without needing general edit rights over the register — and the system enforces the order: an asset has to already be marked Retired before it can be disposed at all, no skipping the step. Every disposal captures what actually happened to it — sale, scrap, recycling, donation, trade-in, or transfer to another company, plus buyer, price, invoice, condition, and who approved it — so the record shows where the money and the asset went, not just that it's gone.

Available today

HR — read-only, scoped to people and availability

A read-only login that can search any employee by name and see every asset tied to them — including gear at a work-from-home employee's house — for offboarding. And before a new starter's first day, HR can check the same system and see for themselves which equipment is sitting there marked Free / Available, across IT gear and Facilities items alike, instead of calling or emailing to ask. See a spare laptop or desk is available? Tell the right department to set that specific one up before day one — no back-and-forth needed just to find out what's free.

Available today

Facilities — scoped to their own categories

Give Facilities visibility and edit rights over desks, chairs, and office equipment categories only, with IT-only gear like laptops and servers scoped out of their view entirely.

Insurance — a schedule that actually stays in sync

The real problem with insuring assets is nobody remembers to tell insurance when something new is bought, written off, transferred, or sold — so the insured value quietly drifts out of date. Add the insurance team as a report recipient and AssetLogit emails them an automatic Excel report on whatever schedule you set (daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly): every asset added, retired, disposed, or transferred in that period, plus the total insured value by category. On top of that, a read-only login and one-click exports of the full register and audit history are there any time an auditor needs the real numbers, not a summary.

What it takes to run it: Linux, and about ten minutes

No specialist skills, no Windows licensing, no separate database server to buy or maintain.

Runs on Ubuntu Linux

Built and tested for Ubuntu Server 22.04 and 24.04 LTS — free, widely supported, and available on every cloud provider or a spare PC you already have. No Windows Server, no Windows license fee, and nothing to renew just to keep the OS legal.

One command installs everything

A single install script provisions Python, the web server, and the database, creates the app's system user, and starts the service — you run one command as root and answer a couple of prompts. No manual dependency chasing.

No specialist skills required

If you can copy a script to a server and run sudo bash install.sh, you can install AssetLogit. No database administrator, no Windows domain expert, no consultant on retainer — the install handles the parts that usually need one.

No separate database license either

Uses a built-in embedded database — no SQL Server, no separate database licensing or DBA to manage. Everything the app needs lives in a single file you can back up with a simple copy command.

Stop tracking assets by memory and hope.

Download the free edition, bring your own AD/Entra tenant, scan a real asset with your phone, and see what your inventory looks like when every change is logged and emailed the moment it happens — on a server you control.

Self-hosted, always. Set up in an afternoon, not a quarter.
